# Publish your first experience

Publishing is four settings and a button. The finish line of this step is not "published": it is "seen by at least one real user". Publish to yourself first, then to your team, then to everyone. Half an hour.

**You will have at the end:** your experience live on your app, confirmed with the Troubleshoot tool and in Analytics.

## Before you start

* The snippet is detected ([Step 4](/docs/getting-started/install-jimo.md)) and you are identified in Users & Segments.
* Your role can publish ([Roles and permissions](/docs/getting-started/your-workspace/roles-and-permissions.md)).
* The experience runs end to end in preview ([Step 3](/docs/getting-started/create-your-first-experience.md)).

## The four settings

Open the experience and click **Target & Publish** at the top right.

<figure><img src="https://2794860263-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FKzAcDWQbK1gKbpra7bkb%2Fuploads%2FV1VelNEza8tYstfQlKmA%2Ftarget-and-publish.png?alt=media&#x26;token=c3a35ac0-0451-4e97-981d-793fc66c72e4" alt="Target and Publish panel with Show on, Where, Who, When"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### Show on

The trigger: page load, a click, an event, a delay. For a first publication: page load, for a welcome tour or a banner. See [Show on](/docs/publish/trigger-on-the-right-spot-show-on.md).

#### Where

The pages: a specific page, a filtered URL, or any page. For a first publication: the one page where the experience makes sense. Path only, the environment handles the domain. See [Where](/docs/publish/target-specific-urls-domains-where.md).

#### Who

The audience: everyone, a segment, or conditions on attributes. For a first publication: a segment that contains only you. Widen later. See [Who](/docs/publish/target-right-people-who.md).

#### When

Schedule, expiration, how often, rate limiting. For a first publication: leave the defaults, but read the pitfall below. See [When](/docs/publish/trigger-at-the-right-time-when.md).

Then **Publish**, and pick the **Env**: Staging if you have one, otherwise Production. See [Environments and domains](/docs/getting-started/your-workspace/environments-and-domains.md).

{% hint style="warning" %}
**The most common surprise at this step: "it does not show".** Five causes cover nearly every case, and none is a bug. You already saw it (experiences show once by default). Rate limiting held it back (one experience per user per 4 hours by default). The environment or the Where does not match the page you are on. The Who excludes you. Jimo did not initialize on that page (Force Identify on, no identify call). The checks are in [Why my experience does not show](/docs/getting-started/publish-your-first-experience/why-my-experience-does-not-show.md).
{% endhint %}

## Publish in three circles

<figure><img src="https://2794860263-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FKzAcDWQbK1gKbpra7bkb%2Fuploads%2FxDz4tIWyPgjGMnO4vA4c%2F10-publish-in-three-circles.png?alt=media&#x26;token=0d55c032-29a0-4941-b8c5-851a58ae0277" alt="Publish to you, then your team, then everyone"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### You

Who = a segment with your own user. Open your app, check the experience shows, go through it. Reset your activity in the Troubleshoot tool to see it again. See [Test safely](/docs/getting-started/publish-your-first-experience/test-safely.md).
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Your team

Change Who to a segment of internal users. Let two or three colleagues go through it on their own machines and browsers. This catches positioning on other screen sizes and the "already seen" confusion.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Everyone

Change Who to the intended audience, switch Env to Production. The experience is live.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Each change to Who or Env applies without republishing.

## Verify

* The Troubleshoot tool on your app lists the experience as **Shown** or **Waiting**, not **Ineligible**. Open it from the experience's **...** menu > Troubleshoot, or with the shortcut once enabled in [Settings > Troubleshoot](/docs/settings/troubleshooting.md).
* [Analytics](/docs/analyze/analytics.md) for the experience shows at least one view from a user who is not you.
* The Get Started page shows step 5 as checked.

That is level 2 done. Keep the experience short, watch its completion rate for a week, then move to [What to build next](/docs/getting-started/what-to-build-next.md).
